5 ways to save money at Christmas

Christmas – the most stressful time of the year. But, it doesn’t have to be this way. You can keep your finances in check without ruining the holidays. Here’s 5 ways to save money at Christmas.

1. Don’t overload the shopping trolley

Remember that many supermarkets re-open on St. Stephen’s Day. While doing the Christmas grocery shopping, it’s often hard to gauge how much or what exactly we need to buy. But if we forget something, it’s not the end of the world. If in doubt, leave it out.

2. ‘Tis the season to be sensible

Many celebrations and gatherings can mean an abundance of food and drink, and a big hole in your wallet too. You don’t have to over indulge every time. Set yourself a limit and allow yourself to let your hair down for those events that you’re really looking forward to.

3. Shop Around

When looking for gifts, do your research. Compare prices online before you buy. Some stores will even offer some competitive online discounts, and many provide free delivery. Don’t stretch your budget, or rush into buying gifts because it’s the first thing you see.

4. Make a budget

It may seem boring, but planning out the Festivities is a good way to keep track of savings. Make a list of everything that requires you to spend over the holidays – parties, presents, groceries, you name it. Note what you can afford and spread the budget accordingly. It’s the easiest way to see what is draining your money and where you need to hold back.

5. Plan for next year

Come January 1st, Christmas is the last thing you want to think about. But financially, the best time to start planning for next year is right now. If you want to save money at Christmas, try saving a small amount all year round. Set up a Christmas Savings Account, deposit a small amount every week, and take the strain off your wallet for Christmas 2018. You’ll thank yourself when it comes around.
