3 Ways to Reduce Your Energy Bills - Member First Credit Union

3 Ways to Reduce your Energy Bills

If you're looking to reduce the cost of your monthly bills and to become more eco-friendly, we have put together a short list of ideas to improve your home's energy rating. Athough these upgrades may seem costly, there are government grants available that can help you get started.

1. Upgrade your Home’s Insulation

By insulating your home, you can make a significant impact on your carbon footprint. According to SEAI, 25% of all energy related CO2 emissions comes from households. Besides the environmental benefits, you can also save a lot of money on your energy bills each month. To help you make this change, there are insulation grants of up to €6,000 available from the SEAI. Check out www.seai.ie to read more about insulation grants.

2. Double or Triple Glazed Windows

An estimated 10% of a home’s heat is lost through its windows, therefore, upgrading your windows can have a huge impact on your heating bills. Also, you may be eligible for government funding. Visit SEAI to book a consultation with their technical surveyor to review your eligibility.

3. Solar PV System

A Solar PV system consists of solar panel mounted to the roof, that generates electricity for your home. The standard 2kWp system would cost around €4,500. However, you can apply for a grant of around €1,800 to help you with this payment.  If you are looking to save money, this type of PV system should save you around €280 p/year on electricity bills.

Now is the best time to invest as the SEAI grant scheme will likely end this summer. Receive a grant from SEAI and make money from the ‘Sell Back to the Grid’ Scheme. Take advantage of the SEAI solar panel grant and the Export Payment before it’s too late!

“Ireland is actually really well suited to solar energy”

–          Eoin O’Flaherty, managing director of Caldor Solar
